BAE Systems expands submarine production capabilities with over USD 260 million in investments

BAE Systems has announced significant progress in its support of the U.S. Navy’s submarine programme, following more than USD 260 million in facility investments over the past six years. The company has enhanced its manufacturing capabilities at key sites in Louisville, Kentucky and Jacksonville, Florida to meet growing demand for submarine construction and maintenance.

These upgrades include advanced welding, machining, and heavy-lift capabilities to accommodate large-scale production. Together, the two sites now boast over 200,000 square feet of dedicated space and a workforce equipped to build complex submarine structures.

“BAE Systems is ready to expand submarine production and build the submarine structures that are vital to safeguarding our nation,” said Charles Lewis, Director of Submarine Programs for Platforms & Services at BAE Systems. “As a prime contractor in many other areas of our business, we look forward to applying that mindset to bolster submarine construction, in partnership with shipbuilders, to support the U.S. Navy.”

The Louisville facility has seen over USD 60 million in upgrades, including enhanced weld equipment, advanced machining centres, and an onsite welder training school. These improvements are aimed at strengthening the site’s role in manufacturing components like the Virginia Payload Module missile tubes and propulsors for the Virginia-class submarines.

In Jacksonville, more than USD 200 million has been invested to modernise the shipyard, including the addition of a state-of-the-art ship-lift and land-level repair facility. The site has also implemented extensive training programmes in welding and manufacturing to ensure a skilled labour force is ready to meet future demands.

The Jacksonville shipyard began fabricating deck structures for the Columbia-class submarine in 2023, further reinforcing BAE Systems’ expanding role in undersea warfare capabilities. These strategic investments position the company to scale its operations in alignment with U.S. Navy requirements and strengthen the broader maritime industrial base.
