Saab and DSTA expand collaboration on underwater defence technologies

The course of the Russo-Ukrainian war highlights that targets particularly vulnerable to conventional kinetic strikes, as well as covert operations and sabotage, are the facilities of the so-called critical infrastructure, mainly in the energy and transportation-logistics sectors. This threat also extends to the maritime domain, as demonstrated vividly by operations carried out by both sides of the conflict. Modern armed forces must, therefore, possess capabilities for Seabed Warfare, enabling the protection of such facilities through early detection of adversarial actions, prevention of their execution, and effective defence measures in case of an attack.

Saab and Singapore’s Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) have signed an expanded Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deepen their collaboration in underwater defence technologies. The signing took place on 20 November during the Sweden–Singapore Royal Business Forum, coinciding with the first Swedish state visit to Singapore.

This new agreement builds upon a prior MoU from 2023, which focused on long-term supportability, personnel development, and smart technologies. The updated scope now includes joint exploration of advanced underwater solutions to bolster maritime security and resilience.

Under the expanded MoU, Saab and DSTA will conduct joint studies on operational concepts and emerging underwater technologies. “This expanded MoU builds upon the fruitful cooperation between Saab and DSTA in the naval domain and reflects our shared commitment to underwater technology innovation,” said Anders Carp, Deputy CEO of Saab. “Together, we will leverage our expertise to strengthen maritime security.”

Roy Chan, Deputy Chief Executive (Operations) of DSTA, highlighted the importance of the partnership. “Collaborating with an industry leader like Saab enables DSTA to push the boundaries of what’s possible in underwater defence technology,” he said. “Through this expanded MoU, we will build on our existing partnership to co-develop advanced solutions that not only meet evolving security demands but also position Singapore at the forefront of maritime resilience and innovation.”
