EU Member States have appointed General André Denk as the new Chief Executive of the European Defence Agency (EDA), following the recommendation of Kaja Kallas, Head of the Agency and High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. General Denk will officially assume his position on 16 May 2025.

This marks the first time in the Agency’s history that a high-ranking military officer will lead the organisation. The appointment reflects a strategic shift towards strengthening operational leadership within the EDA.

“I am glad to appoint General André Denk as the new Chief Executive of the European Defence Agency,” said Kaja Kallas. “He brings a wealth of operational experience and a deep understanding of Europe’s defence needs.”

Kallas emphasised the importance of Denk’s leadership at a time of heightened security concerns. “With war at our borders and hybrid threats across the Union, the EDA’s work to develop joint military capabilities and boost innovation in the defence sector has never been more important,” she added.

General Denk expressed both honour and determination upon his appointment. “The European Defence Agency is uniquely positioned to support Member States across the entire capability development cycle, and beyond,” he stated.

“The Agency brings together the expertise, networks and insight needed to strengthen military cooperation, innovate and support Europe’s defence industry,” he continued. “I am both honoured and energised by my appointment and the challenges ahead.”

Since February 2023, General Denk has served as the EDA’s Deputy Chief Executive, where he played a key role in political matters and led joint procurement initiatives, including for 155mm ammunition in support of Ukraine and replenishment of EU stockpiles. His contributions have been instrumental in advancing European defence collaboration.

Prior to joining the Agency, he was Director Logistics at the EU Military Staff and formerly commanded the Joint School of Logistics in Germany. His operational experience includes international deployments under EU, UN and NATO mandates in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Afghanistan, and Mali.

Born in Rotthalmünster, Germany, in 1967, Denk joined the German armed forces in 1986. He holds a diploma in mechanical engineering and graduated from both the German Command and General Staff College and the French General Staff College.
