In June last year, DAPA and Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) signed the first contract for 20 KF-21s. These aircraft are currently in the assembly phase, with deliveries scheduled to begin in the second half of 2026.
This latest acquisition will support the process of replacing ageing third-generation fighters still in service or recently withdrawn, primarily the F-4 Phantom II and F-5. In parallel with the aircraft order, DAPA also signed a second contract with Hanwha Aerospace for the supply of F414 engines, which are licence-produced in South Korea, along with essential onboard equipment.
Both orders correspond to the Block I configuration of the KF-21. At the same time, KAI is working on the advanced Block II version and is analysing further development options, including a potential Block III.
Additionally, South Korea is exploring specialist variants of the KF-21, with publicly discussed roles such as a dedicated air-defence suppression version equipped with AGM-88E/G AARGM/AARGM-ER missiles and enhanced electronic warfare systems. KAI and South Korean authorities are also conducting marketing efforts aimed at export sales.
Although Indonesia was previously expected to be the first foreign partner, continued cooperation with the country now appears unlikely. The search for potential international buyers remains ongoing.
