Epirus opens immersive innovation centre at Lawton Fort Sill to advance counter-UAS research

By Defence Industry Europe

Epirus has secured a $43,551,060 contract from the U.S. Army's Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office (RCCTO) for the delivery of its second-generation Integrated Fires Protection Capability High-Power Microwave (IFPC-HPM GEN II) systems. The contract includes two systems, associated test events, support equipment, spares and options for additional components and support.

Epirus has announced the opening of a 5,300 square foot immersive innovation facility within Lawton Fort Sill’s Fires Innovation Science and Technology Accelerator (FISTA) Innovation Park. The site is home to the Joint Counter-sUAS University and is regarded as a leading hub for technological advancement.

The Epirus Immersive Innovation Center (EIIC) is designed as an interactive space to support the use of counter-UAS technologies, including the company’s Leonidas high-power microwave platform and weaponised electromagnetic interference capability. The facility aims to provide a collaborative environment for transferring technical knowledge between engineers and end users.

By focusing on human factors and realistic threat scenarios, the EIIC offers user-centred design, development and testing opportunities. Equipped with simulation terminals, control interfaces and mission planning bays, it enables refinement of operational concepts and enhances the one-to-many aerial defeat capacity of Leonidas.

U.S. Representative Tom Cole, Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations, attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the centre’s opening. “It’s an honour to be back at FISTA for the opening of the Epirus Immersive Innovation Center—an investment in the next generation of defence technology and our national security,” said Chairman Cole.

He added: “As near-peer threats evolve, capabilities like Epirus’ Leonidas high-power microwave platform are essential to ensuring the U.S. maintains strategic advantage. This simulation centre is exactly what our air defenders at Fort Sill need to stay ahead of the drone threat and prepare for future fights. We’re pleased to see Epirus expand their Oklahoma footprint and strengthen our state’s innovation ecosystem.”

Located close to Fort Sill, the facility sits near the U.S. Army’s air defence artillery force, which trains to detect, track and neutralise threats such as robotic and autonomous drone attacks. These challenges are increasingly seen as a key feature of modern conflict.

“Epirus is dedicated to Oklahoma and its leadership role in advancing counter-drone technology research and development,” said Hanz Heinrichs, SVP of Growth & Government Relations. “The Epirus Immersive Innovation Center is another example of bringing best-in-class technology to the Lawton area.”
