The U.S. Marine Corps deployed Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 232 “Red Devils” from Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California, to Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, on 8 September 2025. The deployment, under the Marine Corps’ Unit Deployment Program, positions the F/A-18 Hornet squadron with Marine Aircraft Group 12, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, to support flight operations across the Indo-Pacific region.

VMFA-232 will serve as the new UDP squadron and will eventually replace VMFA-214 in theatre. The Red Devils are set to integrate into ongoing operations, enhancing the aviation capabilities of the forward-deployed Marine Air-Ground Task Force.

The Unit Deployment Program provides U.S.-based units with continuous opportunities to operate in the Indo-Pacific through successive and overlapping deployments. By doing so, the Marine Corps maintains readiness while sustaining commitments under the U.S.-Japan Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security.
