South Korea’s defence company Hanwha Aerospace has delivered a new batch of K9A1 self-propelled howitzers to Poland, according to the country’s Ministry of National Defence. The latest shipment contained 21 guns, pushing the total number of K9 howitzers in service with the Polish Armed Forces beyond 200.

All K9 deliveries to Poland are carried out under an executive contract signed in August 2022 between Poland’s defence procurement agency and Hanwha Aerospace. The agreement, valued at 2.4 billion dollars, covers 212 K9A1 systems scheduled for delivery between 2022 and 2026.

In December 2023, Poland signed a second contract with Hanwha Aerospace for an additional batch of K9s. This deal is worth 2.6 billion dollars and includes six K9A1 howitzers and 146 K9PL systems, the latter being a variant of the K9A1 tailored to Polish Army requirements and fitted with subsystems produced by the Polish defence industry.

Poland also signed a wider framework agreement with Hanwha in July 2022 for a total of 672 K9 artillery systems. This makes it highly probable that further orders will follow.

A senior Polish defence source told Defence Industry Europe that new purchases will only proceed if Hanwha carries out a substantial transfer of technology and expertise to the Polish defence sector, enabling domestic production of the howitzers.
