U.S. law requires that any arms sale in the region must not jeopardise Israel’s Qualitative Military Edge, and it remains unclear whether this condition has been met. The administration has not yet detailed how the proposed transfer aligns with those legal safeguards.
Earlier in the day, Trump described Saudi Arabia as a “great ally” and linked the partnership to U.S. actions against Iran in June. He added, “They want to buy, they’ve been a great ally … look at the Iran situation in terms of obliterating their — we obliterated their nuclear capability. We will be doing that, we will be selling F-35s.”
The announcement sets the stage for high-level talks in Washington this week as the crown prince arrives for meetings with U.S. officials. Further information on the sale and its compliance with regional security requirements is expected in the coming days.
