Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said, “Poland has chosen Sweden to partner in its submarine programme. This is a testament to the cooperation between our two countries and Sweden’s status as a defence industry nation. It is also an acknowledgement that Sweden’s defence industry stands strong. Saab has a world-leading submarine programme. Poland and Sweden have a shared view of the challenges facing European security. Together, Sweden and Poland will take greater responsibility for security in the Baltic Sea. We are now significantly intensifying our political, defence and industrial cooperation. In uncertain times for our entire region, we are now strengthening our part of the world together.” He highlighted that the agreement reflects both nations’ aligned security priorities.
Minister for Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard stated, “As close Allies and Baltic Sea States, Poland and Sweden will cooperate more closely to ensure security in the entire Baltic Sea region. We have a solid foundation in our shared understanding of the long-term threat from Russia and the importance of supporting Ukraine.” Her remarks underscored a shared strategic outlook in the region.
Minister for Defence Pål Jonson added, “We are facing the most serious security situation in Europe since the Second World War, and it is more important than ever that we have expanded defence cooperation in the Baltic Sea region. This deal establishes a common system for underwater operations in the Baltic Sea and enhances interoperability between the Swedish and Polish fleets.” He noted that the acquisition supports closer operational alignment.
Relations between the two countries remain historically and politically strong, and Poland was among the first to ratify Sweden’s NATO accession. The partnership has widened in recent years and now covers a broad set of regional security priorities.
In November 2024, Sweden and Poland concluded a strategic partnership agreement signed by their heads of government, focusing on security, defence, innovation and support for Ukraine. This has laid a political framework that continues to guide bilateral cooperation.
In September 2025, Pål Jonson and Polish Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz signed a Letter of Intent on military-technical cooperation, establishing a basis for joint development and production of defence systems. Both sides see this as an important step toward deeper defence industrial links.
Poland’s procurement of Swedish submarines is set to further strengthen cooperation at military, political and industrial levels. The Swedish submarine offering includes state-of-the-art technology provided by the United Kingdom, and together Sweden, Poland and the United Kingdom present a strong and decisive force in the Baltic Sea region.
