L3Harris wins up to $843 million Space Development Agency contract for Tranche 3 tracking satellites

L3Harris Technologies has been awarded a contract by the Space Development Agency to build 18 infrared satellites for the Tranche 3 Tracking Layer, with a value of up to $843 million. The award also covers ground software, operations and sustainment functions.

L3Harris Technologies has been awarded a contract by the Space Development Agency to build 18 infrared satellites for the Tranche 3 Tracking Layer, with a value of up to $843 million. The award also covers ground software, operations and sustainment functions.

 

The satellites will form part of the Space Development Agency’s Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture, which is intended to protect the United States against advanced missile threats, including hypersonic weapons. The Tracking Layer is designed to improve detection and tracking of such threats in real time.

 

 

“L3Harris is proud to support SDA in its mission to deliver a next generation, layered defense architecture that can track threats in real time,” said Christopher Kubasik, chair and chief executive officer of L3Harris. “Defeating the hypersonic missile threat begins in space, and our Tranche 3 satellites will advance our proven, on-orbit tracking and targeting capability needed to protect our homeland.”

The Tranche 3 solution will provide higher-resolution infrared sensing, advanced on-orbit data processing and real-time detection algorithms to support missile tracking. Once deployed, the satellites will integrate with the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture to expand coverage and improve direct connectivity to forces.

L3Harris is supporting the Space Development Agency’s Tracking Layer across all existing tranches of the architecture. The company currently has four missile tracking satellites on orbit for Tranche 0 and a further 34 satellites in development for Tranche 1 and Tranche 2.
