The U.S. Department of War said on Wednesday that defence contractor Lockheed Martin had been awarded a contract linked to foreign military sales to Taiwan to address what Washington described as an urgent requirement for the island’s air force.
The deal has a ceiling value of $328.5 million, with $157.3 million in foreign military sales funding committed at the time of the award, according to a statement from the Pentagon.

“This contract provides for the procurement and delivery of fifty-five Infrared Search and Track Legion Enhanced Sensor pods, processors, pod containers, and processor containers required to meet the urgent operational need of the Taiwan Air Force,” the Pentagon said.
In its original contract notice, the Department of War said the agreement was issued as a letter contract covering hardware production for Sniper, Infrared Search and Track, and Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night systems.

The United States maintains formal diplomatic relations with China while sustaining unofficial ties with Taiwan and remains its most significant arms supplier under US law.
Taiwan was on high alert on Wednesday after China conducted large-scale military drills around the island the previous day, with its coast guard saying the emergency maritime response centre remained operational as Chinese naval movements were monitored.
