The contract, signed in January, covers the fifth and sixth production lots and has a maximum value of $476.5 million. Full funding was obligated at the time of award, with upgraded missiles to be delivered primarily to the U.S. Navy, limited quantities to the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps, and work valued at $99.5 million allocated for the Royal Navy.
As part of the program, RTX will extend the service life of Tomahawk missiles by fifteen years and upgrade them to the Block V standard. The use of missiles already in storage is intended to limit unit modernization costs while maintaining sufficient stockpile levels for potential combat operations.
Work under the contract is scheduled for completion by April 2029. The modernization effort follows recent operational use of Tomahawk missiles by the U.S. Navy, including limited strikes against military targets in Iran during Operation Midnight Hammer in June and against terrorist camps in Nigeria.
During the Nigeria operation, four of the sixteen warheads employed did not detonate. The contract is intended to improve long-term availability and effectiveness of the Tomahawk missile force for U.S. and allied services.
