Boeing has selected Ferra Engineering to produce wing kits for its High Altitude Anti-Submarine Warfare Weapon Capability under an expanded partnership. The contract establishes a local production line for the system and is intended to strengthen Australia’s sovereign defense capabilities.

The HAAWC is designed for deployment from Boeing’s P-8A multi-mission maritime patrol aircraft and enables all-weather, air-launched torpedo delivery. The kit allows crews to engage submarines from high altitude, improving operational effectiveness while enhancing crew safety.

“Local HAAWC production with Ferra means more skilled jobs in Australia and deeper sovereign manufacturing capability,” said Bob Ciesla, vice president of Boeing Precision Engagement Systems. “This partnership serves as a practical investment in national defence and regional security aligned to Australia’s Guided Weapons and Explosive Ordnance Enterprise sovereign objectives.”

Ferra supplies precision components to several Boeing programs, including the MQ-28 Ghost Bat, and exports parts to the United States for platforms such as the F/A-18F Super Hornet, AH-64E Apache and P-8A Poseidon. In 2023, the two companies signed a memorandum of understanding covering wing kit production for Joint Direct Attack Munition Extended Range and Joint Direct Attack Munition Long Range systems.

“We are honored to continue our 17-year-long partnership with Boeing on the HAAWC program,” said Aaron Thompson, chief executive of Ferra Engineering. “This contract not only reinforces our commitment to delivering high-quality, Australian-made defence solutions but also highlights the importance of collaboration in advancing our nation’s defense capabilities.”

Boeing said its participation in the Global Supply Chain program has expanded export opportunities for Australian industry across its worldwide network. The partnerships also support Boeing’s commercial aircraft, defense, space and satellite activities, as well as research and development operations in Australia.
