OpenAI has announced the launch of OpenAI for Government, a dedicated initiative aimed at equipping U.S. public sector workers with advanced artificial intelligence tools to enhance their efficiency and impact. As part of this launch, the company has entered into a pilot programme with the U.S. Department of Defense under a contract with a ceiling of $200 million.

The U.S. Department of War said its enterprise artificial intelligence platform, GenAI.mil, has surpassed one million unique users just two months after deployment, with adoption across every Military Service. Building on that growth, the Department announced a partnership with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into GenAI.mil, making advanced large language models available to all three million Department personnel to support mission execution and readiness.

The Department said GenAI.mil’s expansion reflects a broader cultural and technological shift toward becoming an AI-first enterprise, citing 100% uptime since launch and a robust infrastructure. Officials said the platform is already accelerating operational tempo and improving decision superiority, while comprehensive training will continue to help personnel integrate AI tools into daily workflows.

The initiative implements the War Department’s AI Acceleration Strategy released last month and aligns with the mandate of Donald Trump’s White House AI Action Plan. The Department said integrating ChatGPT into GenAI.mil is another step toward establishing secure, frontier AI capabilities as a standard part of daily operations.
