In a statement shared on the social media platform X, the ministry said debris from the missile fell on vacant land in the Sahinbey district of Gaziantep. Officials confirmed that no casualties or injuries were reported.
The ministry stressed that the country prioritises stability and cooperation in the region. It added that Türkiye places “great importance on good neighborly relations and regional stability.”
Officials also warned that the country would respond to any threat against its territory. The ministry said that “all necessary measures will be taken decisively and without hesitation against any threat directed at our country’s territory and airspace.”
The statement also called on other states to consider Türkiye’s position on regional security issues. “We also reiterate that it is in everyone’s interest to heed Türkiye’s warnings in this regard.”
Türkiye’s Communications Director Burhanettin Duran confirmed further details in a separate message posted on X. He said the missile was “timely engaged and neutralized by NATO air and missile defense assets over the Sahinbey district of Gaziantep.”
Duran also issued a warning regarding actions that could destabilise the region. “We once again strongly reiterate our warning to all parties, particularly Iran, to refrain from actions that could endanger regional security and put civilians at risk,” he said.
The incident followed a similar event reported by the Turkish Ministry of Defence the previous Wednesday. At that time, a ballistic munition fired from Iran towards Turkish airspace was also intercepted by NATO air and missile defence units in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The developments come amid escalating tensions in the region. Israel and the United States recently conducted a joint military operation against Iran.
According to available information, the strikes killed more than 1,200 people, including Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran subsequently launched retaliatory drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq and Gulf states hosting United States military assets.
