According to the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine, the PAC-3 interceptors will enhance the country’s ability to defend against some of the most complex threats currently used on the battlefield. These include ballistic Iskander missiles as well as hypersonic Kinzhal and Zircon missiles.
The ministry emphasised that the Patriot Advanced Capability-3 missile is one of the most effective interceptors against ballistic threats. Measuring around five metres in length and approximately 25 centimetres in diameter, the missile uses a hit-to-kill kinetic interception method that destroys its target through direct collision.
This interception principle ensures that the incoming missile’s warhead is completely destroyed rather than merely damaged. As a result, the risk of debris or residual explosive effects causing damage to critical infrastructure is significantly reduced.
The PAC-3 interceptor is designed for high manoeuvrability and precision engagement. It can reach speeds of up to 6,170 kilometres per hour and weighs about 218 kilograms, while its active radar homing seeker allows the missile to track and intercept fast-moving targets.
The missile’s design also allows it to perform rapid manoeuvres and adjust its trajectory during flight. Unlike some earlier air defence interceptors, the PAC-3 operates independently of a ground-based target illumination radar.
Another advantage highlighted by the ministry is the number of missiles that can be carried by a Patriot launcher. A single launcher can carry up to 16 PAC-3 missiles, enabling the system to intercept up to 16 targets before requiring reloading.
By comparison, launchers equipped with PAC-2 missiles can engage only four targets because each launch container holds a single missile. The increased missile capacity therefore significantly improves a Patriot system’s defensive coverage.
The PAC-3 CRI interceptor has an engagement range of up to 45 kilometres and can intercept targets at altitudes of up to 12 kilometres. The more advanced PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement variant offers even greater performance and extended capabilities.
According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence, these capabilities allow the Patriot system to provide reliable protection for Ukrainian cities against ballistic missile attacks. The delivery of additional interceptors is therefore considered a critical step in strengthening national air defence.
The ministry also noted that protecting Ukraine’s airspace is a central element of the country’s broader defence strategy. “It is important to note that protecting Ukraine’s skies is the first component of Ukraine’s War Plan unveiled by Minister of Defence Mykhailo Fedorov,” the ministry stated.
The plan aims to ensure the rapid detection of all aerial threats while significantly increasing interception success rates. “The goal is to identify 100% of aerial threats in real time and intercept at least 95% of missiles and drones.”
