The visit follows the strategic partnership agreement signed by Sweden and Poland in November 2024. The partnership focuses on strengthening cooperation in security and defence, economic innovation and competitiveness, security in the Baltic Sea region and continued support for Ukraine.
The submarine visit allowed Polish sailors to familiarise themselves with Swedish submarine technology and operational procedures at close range. According to the Swedish Ministry of Defence, this step marks a new phase in defence cooperation between the two countries.
“Poland and Sweden share a clear understanding of the challenges and threats facing our region, in particular the long-term threat posed by Russia. We are therefore in a unique position to work together to strengthen the region’s security and deter Russia’s aggressive behaviour,” said Jonson.
Poland has previously decided to purchase three submarines from Sweden, further strengthening bilateral military, political and industrial ties. The cooperation is expected to deepen as both countries continue to align their defence capabilities.
Negotiations on a leasing agreement for the Swedish submarine HMS Södermanland are due to begin this month. The arrangement is intended to help Poland maintain its submarine capability while new submarines are being developed.
Under the proposed arrangement, the majority of the submarine crew will initially consist of Swedish sailors. Polish personnel are expected to gradually assume operational roles as training progresses.
Sweden has also welcomed Poland’s ongoing defence modernisation efforts. Both countries share the same regional security environment and similar assessments of the threats facing the Baltic Sea region.
