The MATS system has been in service with the Italian Army for many years and is regarded as a simple, reliable and durable solution. However, both organisations said an upgrade is required to meet current standards and improve operational effectiveness.
Under the agreement, RWM Italia and AID will jointly develop and test the upgraded MATS MK2 variant. The new version is expected to enhance safety standards and increase combat effectiveness compared with the existing design.
RWM Italia will act as the Design Authority for the MATS MK2 programme. The upgrade of several hundred thousand mines currently in stock will be carried out by RWM Italia and AID using a cost-effective and streamlined production process.
Work on the programme is expected to begin within the next 12 months. The initiative is also expected to create new jobs at both RWM Italia and AID.
Fabio Sgarzi, Managing Director of RWM Italia S.p.A., said: “We are grateful for the Italian Armed Forces’ confidence in our capabilities and we are enthusiastic to cooperate with AID in this project. With the combat-enhanced MATS MK2, RWM Italia can contribute its expertise as a national centre of excellence for mines, sea mines, bombs, charges and warheads of all kinds.”
Fiammetta Salmoni, General Director of Agenzia Industrie Difesa, said: “This initiative in collaboration with RWM Italia S.p.A. represents a further important step in the reactivation of public Defence production capabilities that are strategic for the country. AID’s competencies and industrial assets will contribute to the successful implementation of this programme as part of the broader set of initiatives launched since my appointment as General Director”.
The programme is part of broader efforts to modernise Italian defence capabilities and strengthen national industrial capacity. The collaboration highlights the role of both public and private sector entities in supporting long-term military capability development.
