The USS Nimitz has been deployed to participate in the 11th edition of the Southern Seas 2026 exercise. The carrier has been reassigned from the Pacific to the area of responsibility of the U.S. Navy’s 4th Fleet and will sail around South America en route to the exercise.

The deployment includes a carrier air wing composed of six aviation squadrons. These units operate F/A-18E/F Super Hornet multirole aircraft, EA-18G Growler electronic warfare aircraft, C-2A Greyhound transport aircraft and MH-60R/S Seahawk helicopters.

The squadrons assigned to the carrier include Helicopter Maritime Squadron 73, Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 6, Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 40, Strike Fighter Squadron 22, Strike Fighter Squadron 137 and Electronic Attack Squadron 139. The carrier is also accompanied by the guided missile destroyer USS Gridley (DDG-101).

During the deployment, a series of additional exercises and engagements with regional partners are planned. Representatives from countries including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala and Uruguay are expected to participate.

Port visits are scheduled in Brazil, Chile, Panama and Jamaica as part of the mission. These activities are intended to strengthen cooperation with partner nations in the region.

The deployment is linked to a decision to extend the service life of the USS Nimitz. The carrier had originally been scheduled for decommissioning in May 2026, but current plans now place its retirement in 2027.
