Under the agreement, production orders can be placed through March 2031. The ammunition may be procured by the U.S. Army or through Foreign Military Sales procedures by international customers.
The M1147 AMP round is designed for 120 mm tank guns used by the M1 Abrams family. It is intended to replace four legacy ammunition types currently in service, including the M830, M830A1, M908 and M1028 rounds.
Officials said the new round combines the capabilities of its predecessors into a single munition. It is designed to engage personnel, light fortifications and lightly to moderately armored targets.
The M1147 AMP includes an airburst capability, allowing detonation at a programmed distance from the target. It can also penetrate reinforced concrete walls of up to approximately 20 centimeters.
In some applications, the new ammunition is expected to provide improved effectiveness compared to older rounds. The development reflects broader efforts to modernize armored warfare capabilities and simplify logistics.
