Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace and Salt Ship Design have been awarded a contract to design a new class of standardised vessels for the Norwegian Navy. The contract was announced by the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency as part of efforts to modernise and streamline the fleet.

The project will focus on developing a unified vessel concept to replace the current fleet of more than 10 classes. Officials said the aim is to improve operational flexibility, extend service life and reduce maintenance complexity.

The contract follows a prequalification process launched in January for the design of up to 28 vessels. After two months, Kongsberg and SALT were selected as the winning team.

“This marks an important step forward for Kongsberg and the Norwegian defence and maritime industry, and we look forward to contributing our expertise and technology to develop the standardised vessels of the future in Norway and internationally,” said Eirik Lie.

“A standardised fleet based on Kongsberg and Salt’s expertise, in support of the Armed Forces and NDMA, will simplify maintenance, reduce costs and ensure more efficient operations for the Navy,” he added.

Salt said the contract strengthens its position in both domestic and international markets. “Through our new office in Bergen, we have strengthened our team and in collaboration with Kongsberg we are establishing ourselves as a solid and trustworthy partner for the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency locally and in the international naval market,” said Torbjørn Bringedal.

The programme is intended to support the development of a standardised vessel class that could be adopted beyond Norway. Officials said the initiative may contribute to increased cooperation and standardisation among allied navies.

Kongsberg and Salt have also recently secured a contract to design new vessels for the Canadian Coast Guard in partnership with Adaptive Marine Solutions. The Norwegian government has indicated that similar vessels may be delivered to the United Kingdom and Lithuania under existing agreements.

Officials said the programme aligns with broader efforts to strengthen the national maritime and defence industry. It is also intended to support closer collaboration with allied countries through shared platforms and capabilities.
