The development timeline was described as a response to national leadership calls to accelerate the delivery of critical capabilities to the Joint Force. Officials said the achievement reflects efforts to streamline defence innovation and field new technologies more quickly.
In July 2025, the Department of War demonstrated LUCAS in the Pentagon courtyard as part of efforts to introduce affordable autonomous systems. By February 2026, the same system had been operationally employed during Operation Epic Fury.
The Indiana National Guard said this transition was enabled by the “speed of relevance” methodology used within the Technology and Readiness Experimentation programme, known as T-REX. The framework is designed to promote collaboration between operators, engineers and acquisition professionals.
According to the statement, T-REX is supported by the Office of the Under Secretary of War for Research and Engineering. The programme aims to accelerate development cycles and integrate new capabilities into operational use.
The Indiana National Guard said the LUCAS programme demonstrates a new model for defence innovation. It added that the effort highlights how collaboration between military and technical partners can translate concepts into operational capability within shortened timelines.
