BAE Systems has been awarded a $146 million undefinitized contract to begin production of M776 cannons for the U.S. Army’s M777 towed 155mm howitzer. The contract establishes a second source producer for the system’s main armament for the first time.

The M776 cannon is a critical component of the M777 artillery system used in operations worldwide. Officials said the additional production source will help accelerate delivery of firepower and strengthen supply chain resilience.

The new production capability will be based in the United States. It is intended to improve the Army’s ability to meet operational requirements more quickly.

Company officials said the initiative supports broader efforts to reinforce the defense industrial base. It is also aimed at enhancing readiness for deployed forces.

Jason Casciotti, vice president of BAE Systems’ Weapon Systems product line, emphasized the importance of the program. “Our team is laser-focused on delivering top-tier capability to equip the brave men and women who defend our nation,” he said.

“By partnering with the Army to expand manufacturing capacity of M776 cannons in the U.S., we’re not just supporting their operational needs, we’re strengthening America’s industrial backbone and ensuring Soldiers always have the best tools for the mission,” Casciotti added.

Production will take place at the company’s facility in Louisville, Kentucky. The site has undergone significant investment to expand its manufacturing capabilities.

BAE Systems said it has invested more than $60 million in the facility and workforce in recent years. These upgrades include improvements in machining, assembly and testing capabilities.

The Louisville site has a long history of producing naval gun systems. It has manufactured components for U.S. Navy programs, including Mk 45 and Advanced Gun System barrels.

Officials said this experience supports the company’s ability to deliver complex systems efficiently. It is expected to reduce risk and support consistent production of M776 cannons.

The contract reflects continued demand for artillery capabilities. It also highlights efforts to expand production capacity in response to evolving operational needs.
