In late September, AEVEX announced Specter, a turbojet-powered autonomous one-way attack platform under development for contested environments and extended missions. The company is working with Divergent Technologies to design the system for scalable production and rapid adaptation to changing requirements.

Specter will support ground-launched and air-launched variants. Its modular airframe and open interfaces are intended to let AEVEX introduce new payloads and technologies without redesigning the entire system.

The platform’s interchangeable nose section will accommodate kinetic, non-kinetic, electronic warfare, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance payloads. The design also leaves room for future payloads as mission needs evolve.

“Specter reflects our lessons learned on capability from delivering thousands of autonomous systems in theater,” said Manan Patel, chief technology officer at AEVEX. “We are not optimizing for a fixed requirement, we are building an architecture that adapts.”

AEVEX says its experience producing and fielding unmanned systems in high volumes has shaped the development program. Lessons from thousands of operational deployments, rapid design iterations and the company’s CompassX autonomy architecture have informed Specter’s software-driven approach.

Divergent’s DAPS digital manufacturing platform is being incorporated into the program through the companies’ recently announced collaboration. It is intended to support rapid iteration and help engineers address manufacturability from the earliest design stages.

The partnership brings production planning into the development process alongside the platform’s modular design. AEVEX says the aim is to establish resilient, scalable manufacturing while retaining flexibility for future changes.

“Specter is designed to evolve with mission demands, payload technologies, and manufacturing advances over time,” Patel said. The aircraft remains under development and is intended to expand AEVEX’s unmanned systems portfolio.
