“By signing this MoU today, we are taking another crucial step in strengthening Austria’s security architecture. Our goal is to significantly enhance our comprehensive defence capabilities, ensuring safety for ourselves and future generations,” stated Minister Tanner. She emphasized that Austria’s neutrality remains unaffected, as decision-making power stays within the country.
Explaining the European initiative, Tanner noted, “When we talk about the European Sky Shield, we refer to joint procurements. This approach allows us to acquire necessary air defence systems more quickly and cost-effectively, essentially getting two for the price of one.”
Austria’s commitment to neutrality remains firm. On July 7, 2023, Minister Tanner, alongside her Swiss counterpart, signed a “Letter of Intent” for the participation of Austria and Switzerland in the initiative. To underline their unique security and defence policies, both ministries issued a “Joint Declaration” on neutrality.
This neutrality clause, encapsulated in the “Joint Declaration,” continues to be a vital part of the cooperation agreement, ensuring compliance with Austria’s legal neutrality requirements.
The MoU also establishes the “ESSI Steering Committee,” a decision-making body comprising one voting representative from each participating country. Decisions within this committee are made unanimously, reflecting the collaborative spirit of the initiative.
