Airbus completes deliveries of H225M helicopters to Hungarian Defence Forces

The Hungarian Defence Forces have officially completed their medium multirole helicopter fleet with the arrival of the final two Airbus H225M helicopters. Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky announced the development at the base of the HDF 86th Helicopter Wing in Szolnok on Tuesday, stating, “This is no longer a promise of the future, it is the reality of the present.”

The minister highlighted that the helicopters are not only modern and reliable but also represent a significant shift in the Hungarian military’s capabilities. “These helicopters are… complex systems that fundamentally change the response capability of the Hungarian Defence Forces, as well as their mobility and integrability into international military operations,” he said.

He explained that the complete fleet of 16 helicopters marks a major milestone in the broader military development programme. “The now complete fleet of 16 helicopters is a quality leap in the operational possibilities of the Hungarian Defence Forces,” added Szalay-Bobrovniczky.

Ten of the helicopters serve as tactical medium-lift platforms, supporting rapid and safe transport of personnel, equipment, and supplies. The remaining six are designated for special operations and are equipped with HForce weapon management systems developed specifically for the Hungarian air force.

The minister noted that the helicopters already in service have proven effective in recent operations. He cited the 2023 North Macedonian wildfires and a major fire in Vas County as examples where Hungarian crews delivered prompt and professional responses.

Szalay-Bobrovniczky underlined the importance of personnel, stating, “The machines and the technology are very important, but humans are even more so.” He emphasised the armed forces’ ongoing focus on the selection and training of air force personnel.

The Defence Minister expressed gratitude to Airbus and the HDF 86th Helicopter Wing for their roles in the successful project. “The complete fleet should increase the strength of the Hungarian Defence Forces, and, through it, serve the security of Hungary and the Hungarian people,” he concluded.

Dennis Bernitz, Head of Sales Western Europe, Airbus Helicopters, praised the Hungarian fleet, stating it is “the most modern one in Europe.” The new helicopters replace the ageing Soviet-era Mi-8 and Mi-24 models, with the transition process beginning in 2018.

General Dr. Gábor Böröndi, Chief of the HDF Defence Staff, said that both experienced and new pilots have undergone necessary training to operate the advanced aircraft. “We are witnessing a shift of rotary-wing culture here, in Szolnok,” he remarked.

He noted the increasing role of digital systems in modern aviation. “Although flying itself has become easier, this means that the pilots must pay attention to more factors and they have more tasks as well,” said Böröndi.

He added that the Defence Forces have not only acquired the helicopters but also created the infrastructure for their optimal use. “This enables us to lay emphasis on participation in different operations, including special operations and disaster management tasks,” he said.

The event included static and dynamic displays showcasing the aircraft’s capabilities. The H225M has a maximum takeoff weight of 11 tons, a length of 19.5 metres, and a height of 4.97 metres, with a maximum speed of 324 km/h and cruise speed of 262 km/h.

The aircraft are capable of transporting troops and cargo, carrying sling loads, and conducting firefighting operations, including night missions using night vision goggles. The special operations variants are equipped with a 20mm autocannon, 70mm rocket pods, and are expected to receive anti-tank guided missiles in future.

Additional onboard systems include a Triple Inertial Navigation System, a multifunctional load management system, a winch, and gear for rappelling and fast roping. These features position the H225M as a key component in Hungary’s evolving defence capabilities.
