The programme aims to replace the current F-5 fleet and cover the full advanced training process for Spanish combat pilots. It includes the acquisition of 30 HÜRJET aircraft, their conversion with Spanish content, the establishment of an Aircraft Conversion Centre in Spain, refurbishment of the training facilities at Talavera la Real Air Base, and integrated operation and maintenance services at the base.
The programme will be executed in two simultaneous phases, with the first involving delivery of 30 aircraft in their initial configuration, certification in Spain, and handover to the customer during 2028 and 2029. The second phase will focus on converting the aircraft with national content, with deliveries planned from the second half of 2031 through 2035.
Conversion of the first two aircraft will take place at Airbus facilities in Getafe, while the remaining 28 will be upgraded at the new Conversion Centre to be established in Spain. According to Jean-Brice Dumont, “This ambitious programme seeks to create a state-of-the-art combat training system in Spain that addresses the immediate needs of the Air and Space Force. It will also boost national industry participation, return on investment and capability development, ensuring Spanish sovereignty throughout the entire process.”
The national conversion effort will involve several Spanish technology and defence companies, focusing on mission and training systems, avionics, mission recording and armament simulation. The programme also foresees the creation of a new ground-based training system at Talavera la Real Air Base in 2028, alongside a services package to ensure high fleet availability and effective operation of the training centre.
