France expects to receive all 18 helicopters by mid-2029. The French Army Aviation’s special forces squadron in Pau will operate the fleet.
The Standard 2 is a new configuration of the NH90 tactical transport helicopter. It was developed specifically for demanding special forces missions.
“We are honoured to deliver this NH90 Standard 2 to the French armed forces,” said Matthieu Louvot, CEO of Airbus Helicopters. “This new standard builds upon the proven capabilities of the NH90 TTH with new breakthrough features designed specifically for special forces.”
“More than ever, special forces operators will be able to execute their difficult missions in the toughest environments,” he added. “We are very pleased that Spain has also joined the development of the features that will enhance the crew’s situational awareness.”
“It shows that this new standard of the NH90 is on its way to becoming the benchmark for special forces across the world.” Spain joined the programme in December 2025 with an order for 31 NH90 helicopters in a similar configuration.
The French aircraft features Safran’s Euroflir 410 D electro-optical system and a new digital map generator. It also provides a station for a third crew member and enlarged rear sliding windows for self-protection guns.
The configuration includes provisions for the rapid integration of a Direct Aperture System now under development. The system is intended to improve visibility during day and night operations in snow, dust and fog.
Planned upgrades also include Thales’ fully digital TopOwl helmet. The helmet will display imagery from the Direct Aperture System and electro-optical system simultaneously on its visor.
The NATO Helicopter Management Agency ordered the Standard 2 programme from NHIndustries and its industrial partners in 2020. Those partners are Airbus Helicopters, Leonardo and GKN Fokker.
NHIndustries is responsible for the design, manufacture and support of the NH90. Airbus Helicopters owns 62.5% of the venture, Leonardo holds 32% and GKN Fokker owns 5.5%.
