Airbus has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Ultra Cyber Ltd from Cobham Ultra, a portfolio company of Advent, the company said. The move is aimed at strengthening Airbus’ position as a sovereign cybersecurity provider in the United Kingdom and across Europe.

The acquisition will enhance Airbus’ end-to-end cyber portfolio and complement its existing UK-based capabilities in Newport, Wales. Ultra Cyber employs more than 200 staff, primarily based at its cyber centre of excellence in Maidenhead.

Airbus said the business will be integrated into its Defence and Space division, specifically within the Connected Intelligence unit. The deal is expected to support the development of a scaled UK-based sovereign cyber capability.

“This acquisition testifies to our long-term commitment to the UK as a core home market,” said Mike Schoellhorn, CEO of Airbus Defence and Space. “By joining our expertise with Ultra Cyber’s unique capabilities, we are acting as a long-term, trusted partner to the UK Ministry of Defence. We are building the resilient, sovereign infrastructure required to help keep the UK and its allies ahead in the cyber domain.”

The acquisition also includes specialised airborne datalink capabilities, which Airbus said will complement its military aircraft portfolio. These capabilities are intended to strengthen data protection across both ground and airborne systems.

Airbus described the investment as part of its broader strategy to become a leading European multi-sovereign cyber provider. The company aims to support secure digital infrastructure for European nations as well as NATO and Five Eyes partners.

The move follows Airbus’ acquisition of German cybersecurity firm infodas in 2024, which expanded its capabilities in cross-domain solutions. Airbus now operates cyber activities across several European countries, including the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Finland.

Shonnel Malani, Managing Partner at Advent and Chair of the Board at Ultra Electronics, said the investment had strengthened national capabilities. “During what has been a time of major geopolitical tension and uncertainty, we are proud that the investments made in Ultra Cyber, under Advent’s ownership, have supported efforts to help protect the country and its allies from electronic warfare, and contributed to strengthening the UK’s sovereign capabilities.”

Juliette Wilcox, President of Ultra I&C UK Cyber, said the agreement would support further development of advanced solutions. “This agreement marks an exciting next chapter for Ultra Cyber and a major step forward for the UK’s sovereign cyber capability. Together, we will combine complementary strengths to help accelerate innovation, deepen R&D, and expand delivery of advanced cyber solutions in the UK and internationally.”

The transaction remains subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to close in the second half of 2026. Airbus said the acquisition underlines its role as a long-term partner in strengthening digital security infrastructure in the UK and beyond.
