According to the DSCA press release titled “Canada – Joint Light Tactical Vehicles”, the Canadian Government has requested the purchase of up to 60 JLTVs and up to nine JLTV cargo trailers. The package will also include communication equipment, mobility and survivability enhancements, spare parts, maintenance tools, technical manuals, training, and other related logistical and programme support.
The DSCA stated that the proposed sale “will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by helping to improve the military capability of Canada, a NATO Ally”. It described Canada as “an important force for ensuring political stability and economic progress, and a contributor to military, peacekeeping, and humanitarian operations around the world”.
The agency further noted that the sale will strengthen Canada’s capacity to address current and future threats and to operate in increasingly complex environments. It added that the equipment “would also contribute to increased burden-sharing with allies and partners in support of peace operations and peacekeeping around the world”.
The DSCA confirmed that Canada would have no difficulty integrating the equipment and services into its armed forces. It also stated that the proposed sale “will not alter the basic military balance in the region”.
The principal contractors for the deal will be AM General, LLC, based in Auburn Hills, Michigan, and Mishawaka, Indiana. The DSCA noted that Canada typically requests offsets, which will be defined in negotiations between the purchaser and the contractor.
