Anduril unveils Copperhead: pioneering a new generation of autonomous undersea weapons [VIDEO]

American defence technology firm Anduril Industries has announced the launch of Copperhead, a high-speed, software-defined family of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs). This new system is designed to operate independently or in concert with other autonomous maritime, surface, and aerial assets, offering enhanced undersea capabilities for both defence and commercial use.

American defence technology firm Anduril Industries has announced the launch of Copperhead, a high-speed, software-defined family of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs). This new system is designed to operate independently or in concert with other autonomous maritime, surface, and aerial assets, offering enhanced undersea capabilities for both defence and commercial use.

 

The Copperhead line includes two models—Copperhead-100 and Copperhead-500—each tailored for different mission profiles, payloads, and operational ranges. The system provides a cost-effective and rapidly deployable solution compared to traditional undersea weapons, whose production and design remain rooted in Cold War-era approaches.

 

 

 

A key innovation in the Copperhead family is Copperhead-M, a torpedo-like munition variant specifically built for autonomous delivery platforms. “Copperhead-M is the first torpedo capability built to be carried by autonomous systems,” said an Anduril spokesperson, highlighting its role in expanding the effectiveness of unmanned naval operations.

The Copperhead-M enables autonomous vehicles to perform high-risk missions with precision, reducing reliance on manned platforms like nuclear submarines and surface warships. For instance, Anduril’s large Dive-XL AUV can deploy dozens of Copperhead-100Ms or multiple Copperhead-500Ms, creating concentrated, on-demand underwater firepower.

This capability allows autonomous fleets to exert control over vast ocean areas, enhancing naval reach while protecting more valuable assets and personnel. “Victory at sea will require large fleets of autonomous subsea, surface, and air vehicles capable of bringing advanced awareness and overwhelming adversaries with mass maritime effects,” Anduril stated.

Beyond military use, the Copperhead AUVs are also intended for rapid-response commercial applications such as search and rescue, infrastructure inspection, and environmental monitoring. With speeds exceeding 30 knots, they can carry various sensor payloads, including sonar, chemical detectors, and magnetometers.

 

 

Anduril positions Copperhead as part of a broader shift toward networked, intelligent maritime systems that can adapt to dynamic threats and missions. “With the addition of Copperhead, Anduril is building a family of intelligent, autonomous maritime systems… ensuring superiority in any maritime environment,” the company affirmed.
