The vessel, carrying pennant number 261, received systems covering surveillance, fire control, electro-optics, communications and navigation. ASELSAN said the package was selected to strengthen the corvette’s operational and combat capabilities.
The configuration includes the CENK 200 search and target-detection radar and the AKREP 100-N fire-control radar. The ship also carries the AHTAPOT 100 electro-optical reconnaissance, surveillance and targeting system.
ASELSAN supplied the ACROSAT 3210M X-band satellite communications system for secure long-range connectivity. The package also includes the KARETTA 500 anti-jam system for protecting satellite navigation signals.
The delivery gives ASELSAN a larger role in Romania’s naval modernisation and places its systems aboard a warship operated by a European ally. It also broadens the company’s position in the international market for naval sensors, communications and fire-control equipment.
Contraamiral August Roman was originally built for the Turkish Navy as the Hisar-class patrol vessel Akhisar, carrying pennant number P 1220. The ship was handed over in December 2024 but was not placed in operational service by the Turkish Navy.
Romania agreed to acquire the vessel under a government-to-government contract signed in December 2025. The agreement was valued at €223 million net.
Ownership of the ship was transferred to Romania on 16 June 2026. It was subsequently renamed Contraamiral August Roman for service with the Romanian Naval Forces.
The vessel is described as the Romanian Naval Forces’ first modern warship. Its acquisition provides Romania with a newly built platform fitted with an integrated suite of Turkish naval technologies.
For ASELSAN, the programme represents a significant European export reference for its maritime portfolio. The company said the delivery reflected growing international demand for its naval systems and an expanding role in allied fleet-modernisation programmes.
