Athens prepares to host DEFEA 2025, a major hub for international defence cooperation

By Defence Industry Europe

The countdown to DEFEA – Defence Exhibition Athens 2025 has officially begun, with the international event set to take place from 6–8 May 2025 at the Metropolitan Expo in Athens. Held under the patronage of the Hellenic Ministry of National Defence, the exhibition will welcome 436 exhibitors from 37 countries, including 18 national pavilions and 98 official delegations from 45 nations.

With the European Union preparing to invest heavily in rearming member states and strengthening collective defence, DEFEA 2025 is poised to be a central platform for showcasing global defence innovation. The exhibition will span all domains – land, sea, air, cyberspace, and space – and bring together global leaders to present the latest in defence and security technologies.

Key discussions will focus on the EU’s need to increase defence expenditure, revitalise its industrial base, and build strategic resilience in response to a rapidly evolving security environment. Senior officials from NATO and the EU, along with representatives from key institutions such as DG DEFIS, EDA, EDF, EDIDP, OCCAR, NSPA, DIANA, and the Hellenic initiative HCDI, will be in attendance to address these strategic priorities.

One of the highlights of DEFEA 2025 will be the unveiling of Greece’s new multi-layered air defence framework, the ‘Shield of Achilles’. This advanced five-tier system represents a significant development in integrated air defence and aims to set a new benchmark for national and allied security.

The exhibition will also feature advanced missile systems and a full spectrum of precision-guided munitions vital to modern warfare. Attendees will see a comprehensive range of autonomous systems – UAVs, USVs, UUVs – and cutting-edge counter-drone solutions designed to neutralise both singular and swarm threats.

In addition, the display will include main battle tanks, armoured vehicles, helicopters, artillery, multiple launch rocket systems, communication and command systems, small arms, guided missiles, and strategic weaponry. These systems underline the exhibition’s commitment to highlighting the most innovative technologies across the defence spectrum.

DEFEA serves as a key international venue for B2B, B2G, and G2G interactions, promoting strategic partnerships and dialogue around shared security concerns, European defence strategies, and the broader geopolitical landscape. It offers a unique setting for meaningful engagement between public institutions, private enterprises, and defence stakeholders.

Among the 98 confirmed delegations are senior political and military officials from Armenia, Cyprus, Romania, Hungary, Serbia, Bulgaria, Montenegro, and France, as well as representatives from Estonia, Saudi Arabia, and 14 additional nations. Greece will be represented by the Hellenic Ministry of National Defence, the General Directorate for Defence Equipment and Investments, the Hellenic Armed Forces General Staff, and other key security and civil agencies.

High-level military leaders from the United States, Ukraine, Egypt, Australia, Italy, Spain, Poland, Israel, Jordan, and other nations will also participate. Industry representatives from 16 countries, including Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, Lithuania, France, Italy, the Czech Republic, Portugal, and India, will be present to explore cooperation opportunities.
