Australian Army successfully tests NASAMS air defence system during Talisman Sabre 2025

By Defence Industry Europe

The Australian Army has advanced its air and missile defence capability with the successful firing of two AIM-120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles during Exercise Talisman Sabre 2025. The live-fire exercise was conducted by the 16th Regiment at the remote Bradshaw Field Training Area in the Northern Territory, approximately 600 kilometres south of Darwin.

The missiles were launched from the National Advanced Surface to Air Missile System (NASAMS), targeting and destroying a simulated cruise missile threat flying several kilometres away at high altitude. This marked a significant operational milestone for the Army’s 111 Battery and the broader 16th Regiment.

Air and Missile Defence Operator Gunner Seth Allen reflected on the experience, stating, “The thrill of a live-fire was not lost on any of us.” He added, “It was a long and arduous journey to get here and a lot of long hours, but incredibly rewarding.”

The successful test underlined the increasing capability and readiness of Australia’s air defence forces in complex and demanding environments. Exercise Talisman Sabre 2025 continues to serve as a key opportunity for the Australian Defence Force to validate systems and train personnel under realistic conditions.
