The deal forms part of a framework agreement covering the potential delivery of up to 300 SAM120 mortars to Azerbaijan, with an estimated total value of up to €650 million. The contract on the Azerbaijani side was signed by the state-owned Iglin Research and Production Enterprise.
Slovak Defence Minister Robert Kaliňák said that ZTS Special will begin production of the mortars immediately after the contract signing. He added that the first system built for Azerbaijan is due to be presented in autumn 2026 at an arms exhibition in Baku.
The 120 mm AM120 automatic mortar, in its self-propelled SAM120 variant, was first unveiled by ZTS Special at the IDEB Defence & Security exhibition in Bratislava in May 2024. The remotely operated turret-mounted system features a 35-round automatic carousel loader, a rate of fire of up to 20 rounds per minute, and a standard range of 8 km, with crew requirements of two to four personnel.
Details of the configuration ordered by Azerbaijan have not been disclosed. When shown at exhibitions, the AM120 has been mounted on a Tatra Force 815-7 (6×6) chassis with a four-seat Puma L2 Long armoured cab, powered by a 300 kW diesel engine and equipped with a Lansys fire control system supplied by Slovakia’s Kerametal.
