B-2 Spirit stealth bomber in action: U.S. Air Force conducts precision strike against Houthi targets

By Defence Industry Europe

On October 16, the United States Air Force (USAF) carried out a precision strike against five underground weapons storage facilities in Houthi-controlled Yemen using B-2 Spirit stealth bombers. The mission, conducted by bombers from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri, was announced by the 131st Bomb Wing press service in a statement released on November 22.

The B-2 Spirit, produced by American defense giant Northrop Grumman, is a key component of the U.S.’s long-range strike arsenal. According to the company, the B-2 is one of the most survivable aircraft in the world, with unique stealth characteristics that allow it to penetrate even the most sophisticated enemy defenses. This capability ensures the bomber remains vital to national security and strategic deterrence.

The operation, planned and executed by the 131st Bomb Wing in coordination with the 509th Bomb Wing and the Joint-Global Strike Operations Center (J-GSOC), highlights the strategic importance of the B-2 Spirit—the world’s only stealth bomber. This mission was a collaborative effort involving active-duty Airmen, Air National Guard personnel, and civilian contractors.

“This mission underscores the readiness of our Airmen and aircraft to respond anytime, anywhere,” said Maj. Gen. Jason R. Armagost, commander of the 8th Air Force and J-GSOC. The B-2 Spirit, with its unmatched stealth, range, and precision weaponry, demonstrated its effectiveness in penetrating heavily defended airspace to strike critical targets with precision.

The operation required meticulous planning and coordination across multiple domains, including airspace deconfliction, aerial refueling, and intelligence analysis. Planners at J-GSOC ensured seamless integration of these elements, proving the complexity of CONUS-based strike operations.

The strike mission highlighted the vital partnership between active-duty Airmen and the Air National Guard. At Whiteman AFB, the 131st and 509th Bomb Wings worked in tandem, from maintenance and logistics to tactical execution. Additionally, the 157th Air Operations Group and 257th Combat Operations Flight provided support from Jefferson Barracks Air National Guard Station in St. Louis.

“This mission was the result of hard work, long hours, and dedication by many across the installation,” said Col. Keith J. Butler, commander of the 509th Bomb Wing. “Team Whiteman answered the nation’s call with precision, professionalism, and outstanding performance.”

The successful operation sent a clear message about U.S. capabilities. “We showed the world a glimpse of what Team Whiteman can achieve,” said Butler. The B-2’s ability to deliver long-range, survivable strikes ensures the U.S. maintains a credible deterrent against potential threats.

Col. Jared Kennish, commander of the 131st Bomb Wing, praised the partnership between the active-duty and Guard components. “This mission was a team effort, and our Missouri Guard Airmen played a critical role every step of the way,” he said.

The operation reaffirmed the B-2 Spirit as a cornerstone of U.S. strategic deterrence. Its combination of stealth technology, advanced weapons systems, and long-range reach ensures it remains one of the most capable and versatile aircraft in the world.

The mission also emphasized the U.S. military’s readiness to act decisively in defense of national interests. “Whether called upon for strategic deterrence or decisive global strikes, the Joint-Global Strike Operations Center remains agile and ready,” said Armagost.
