B-52 Stratofortress bombers conduct first-ever live weapons drop in Sweden

By Defence Industry Europe

Soaring through the skies since the 1950s, the B-52 Stratofortress is a U.S. Air Force (USAF) workhorse and an enduring symbol of American military might. The eight-engine behemoth boasts unique capabilities unmatched by any other American warplane – which is why, after more than 70 years of service, it continues to play a vital role in our nation's defense and national security strategy. And thanks to a collaboration between L3Harris and the USAF, this iconic aircraft is poised to remain mission-ready against highly sophisticated, emerging threats for decades to come.

Two U.S. Air Force B-52H Stratofortress bombers successfully carried out their first-ever live weapons drop in Sweden on 11 March as part of the Bomber Task Force (BTF) mission VIKING NEBULA. The mission was designed to enhance operational coordination between U.S. and Swedish forces, demonstrating a new level of military cooperation.

Escorted by two Swedish JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets, the bombers proceeded to the Vidsel Test Range, where they released GBU-38 Joint Direct Attack Munitions. The mission was supported on the ground by both U.S. and Swedish Joint Terminal Attack Controllers, ensuring precise targeting and execution.

This exercise aimed to refine precision strike capabilities in a complex training environment while strengthening interoperability between air and ground forces. By conducting live-fire operations in Sweden, the U.S. Air Force and its Swedish counterparts enhanced their ability to operate together in real-world scenarios.

As part of the mission, the B-52 bombers also performed a low-formation flyover of the Swedish Parliament in Stockholm. This event commemorated the first anniversary of Sweden’s accession to NATO, symbolising the country’s closer integration with the alliance.

The aircraft and aircrews involved in the operation are currently deployed with the 69th Expeditionary Bomb Squadron at RAF Fairford, England. From this strategic location, they continue to conduct operations alongside NATO allies and partners across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
