BAE Systems and U.S. Army advance M109-52 artillery system under new development agreement

By Defence Industry Europe

BAE Systems has joined forces with the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Armaments Center (DEVCOM-AC) to advance the M109-52 Self-Propelled Howitzer prototype. This collaboration, under a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA), aims to enhance artillery capabilities currently in operational use.

The M109-52 offers a low-risk technical solution and cost-effective upgrade path, providing essential core warfighting capabilities at a faster pace. It builds on extensive prior work and testing conducted independently by both BAE Systems and DEVCOM-AC.

“We are working with DEVCOM-AC to continue modernizing the U.S. Army’s long-range precision fires needs,” said Dan Furber, artillery product line director for BAE Systems’ Combat Mission Systems business. “We’re bringing together battle-proven systems with mature technologies to secure a significant leap forward in capability at a much lower cost – that’s the power in partnership.”

The M109-52 development effort is focused on delivering improvements in long-range firepower and overall system performance. These enhancements are designed to meet the U.S. Army’s evolving operational requirements more efficiently.

Ongoing work will continue at Picatinny Arsenal and across BAE Systems’ extensive U.S.-based defence industrial network. Key sites involved include facilities in Anniston (Alabama), Elgin (Oklahoma), Minneapolis (Minnesota), Sterling Heights (Michigan), and York (Pennsylvania).
