BAE Systems Bofors and FMV sign agreement for development of TRIDON Mk2 air defence system

By Defence Industry Europe

BAE Systems Bofors has signed a letter of intent with FMV (Swedish Defence Materiel Administration) to develop a demonstrator for the new TRIDON Mk2 air defence system. This agreement reflects FMV’s increasing need to address the threat posed by drones and other aerial threats.

The signing took place at AUSA 2024 in Washington, attended by military leaders, including the Swedish Army Chief. Lena Gillström, CEO of BAE Systems Bofors, and Jonas Lotsne, Head of Army Materiel at the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), signed the agreement, representing a step forward in the development of Sweden’s air defence capabilities.

The TRIDON Mk2 is a modular 40mm air defence system designed to combat a variety of threats, including drones and other airborne and ground-based targets. It is built for the modern battlefield, offering high precision, efficiency, and protection for both military forces and civilian infrastructure.

BAE Systems Bofors emphasised that the TRIDON Mk2 is one of the most effective anti-aircraft systems available today. The system is a result of nearly 90 years of development, with its origins dating back to 1936, and is designed to adapt to the evolving needs of modern warfare.

Capable of countering multiple threats quickly, the TRIDON Mk2 offers a cost-effective, easy-to-maintain solution. Its modular design allows it to incorporate new technologies, ensuring it remains adaptable and future-proof.

The TRIDON Mk2 fills a critical gap in air defence, providing a low-cost, rapid-response system that complements more expensive missile-based solutions. Its flexibility makes it suitable for addressing threats ranging from drones to cruise missiles and armoured vehicles, offering a comprehensive solution for securing airspace and protecting both military and civilian assets.
