BAE Systems Hägglunds to design a new version of CV90 for Sweden

By Defence Industry Europe

BAE Systems Hägglunds has received a contract from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) to develop the preliminary design of a new version of the CV90 infantry fighting vehicle for the Swedish Armed forces. These new vehicles are intended to replace the family of vehicles previously supplied to Ukraine. The contract is valued at SEK 36 million (EUR 3.1 million).

The contract for the preliminary design of the new version of CV90 IFV is the first step in determining the vehicle configuration to replace the Strf 9040C. The Swedes anticipate that this project will be ready by early 2024, at which point orders can be placed for production vehicles, designated as CV9035 Mk IIIC. Additionally, orders for components and materials for the production of vehicles, which have the longest delivery times, can be placed simultaneously, as stated by FMV.

The vehicle’s name indicates that FMV intends to acquire vehicles with different armaments from the previously used CV90s. So far, Bofors 40mm guns have been used, and the new vehicle will likely feature a more modern 35mm gun.
