BAE Systems secures GBP 285m contract for Royal Navy modernisation programme

By Defence Industry Europe

BAE Systems has been awarded a £285 million contract by the UK Ministry of Defence to modernise the Royal Navy’s Shared Infrastructure, Combat Management Systems (CMS), and warship networks. The programme, named RECODE, will span eight years and aims to ensure the Navy’s fleet remains equipped to address evolving military challenges.

The RECODE initiative is tailored to meet future operational needs, delivering modernisation efforts at a rapid pace. It will enable the agile deployment of new capabilities, ensuring the Royal Navy is prepared for current and emerging threats.

Building on 13 years of collaboration with the Royal Navy, BAE Systems’ CMS is already operational across various naval platforms. The new contract underscores the ongoing commitment to providing advanced combat systems for the fleet, which includes high-profile assets such as the Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers, Type 45 destroyers, and Type 26 frigates.

Key elements of the programme include maintaining the safety, security, and availability of combat systems across 20 ships. Architectural and capability enhancements will be delivered directly to the fleet, using agile engineering principles like DevSecOps, which integrate security at every stage of the software lifecycle.

RECODE also introduces a new collaborative working approach between BAE Systems, Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) Maritime Combat Systems, and Navy Command. This closer partnership aims to foster joint decision-making and improved communication, ensuring the programme meets the Navy’s needs effectively.

In addition to supporting over 200 highly skilled jobs across BAE Systems’ sites in Filton, Dorchester, New Malden, Frimley, and Portsmouth, the programme will drive further investment in UK small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and high-tech suppliers.

Steve Carter, Naval Ships Combat Systems Director at BAE Systems, emphasised the strategic importance of the contract: “RECODE represents a huge stride forward in our partnership with the Royal Navy and will help to realise warfare capability of the future. The global threat picture and advances in technology demand more ambitious and far-reaching solutions.”

Commodore Phil Game of DE&S highlighted the importance of maintaining flexibility and capability: “This programme ensures that in-service vessels remain robust, evergreen, and fit for the future. By upskilling the workforce and sustaining UK jobs, we can enhance the Royal Navy’s agility in an ever-changing Defence environment.”

Captain Kevin Miller of the Royal Navy underlined the programme’s focus on agility and adaptability: “Agility in equipment, process, and mindset is essential to maintain our military advantage. RECODE will ensure the Navy can evolve and adapt at the pace of relevance.”
