BAE Systems secures USD 162 million U.S. Army contract for M777 howitzer structures

By Defence Industry Europe

BAE Systems has been awarded a USD 162 million contract by the U.S. Army to produce major structures for the M777 lightweight howitzer. The contract finalises work that began under an Undefinitized Contract Action (UCA) in December 2023 and supports the restart of M777 production.

The company has already commenced production planning, working with its supply chain across the UK and the United States. Key components, including the titanium structures that form the gun’s foundation, will be manufactured at BAE Systems’ new artillery facility in Sheffield and through U.S.-based suppliers.

Deliveries of the first major structures are scheduled to begin in 2026. This effort will contribute to meeting increased demand for artillery systems, particularly from countries in Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

John Borton, Vice President and General Manager of BAE Systems Weapon Systems UK, stated: “This contract is a major milestone in revitalising M777 production at a critical time, where the howitzers are playing a key role in operations in Europe.” He added, “We are honoured to support our NATO allies by providing them with the only battle-proven 155mm lightweight howitzer in the world.”

BAE Systems highlighted that restarting M777 production presents an opportunity for both new and existing users to benefit from a live production line and cost efficiencies. The M777’s lightweight design, being half the weight of other 155mm towed howitzers, allows for rapid deployment and superior mobility in combat environments.

With more than 1,250 units already in service across the United States, Europe, Canada, Australia, and India, the M777 continues to prove its value in modern warfare. BAE Systems plans to sustain the platform’s leading position through technical upgrades, enhanced mobility, and support for precision-guided long-range munitions.
