According to the Department of Defence, the contract is valued at nearly USD 580 million and is expected to be completed by the end of January 2029. The exact number of M109A7 artillery systems and M992A3 ammunition carriers ordered has not been disclosed by the American government.
This is the third contract for M109A7 howitzers that BAE Systems has signed in 2024. The first and second agreements were signed in January and March, respectively.
BAE Systems reports that the M109A7 is the latest howitzer in the company’s M109 family of vehicles, serving as the primary indirect fire support system for the Army’s Armored Brigade Combat Teams (ABCTs). It uses the existing main armament and cab structure of the Paladin M109A6 while replacing the vehicle’s chassis components with modern parts common to the Bradley vehicle. This improved chassis structure offers greater survivability and compatibility with existing ABCT systems, thereby reducing operational sustainability costs by replacing obsolete components.
The M109A7 is supported by the Army as a crucial technology enhancement program to maintain the combat capability of its ABCTs. It addresses long-term readiness and modernization needs of the M109 family of vehicles through a critical redesign and production plan that leverages the most advanced technology available today. This state-of-the-art “digital backbone” and power generation capability provide a more robust, survivable, and responsive indirect fire support capability for ABCT soldiers.
