BAE Systems secures USD 68 million contracts for U.S. Army Arctic operations vehicles

By Defence Industry Europe

BAE Systems has been awarded USD 68 million in contracts to produce an additional 44 Cold Weather All-Terrain Vehicles (CATVs) for the U.S. Army. The funding includes a USD 48 million add-on to an existing full-rate production contract signed in August 2022 and a USD 20 million allocation for 2025.

The CATV, part of the BvS10 family, is designed to operate in the harshest conditions, including Arctic environments. It is based on the unarmoured Beowulf variant, which the U.S. Army selected in 2022 to replace the ageing Bv206 fleet, providing a modernised platform for extended operations and force projection in extreme climates.

Dean Medland, vice president of Sustainment & International at BAE Systems, highlighted the significance of the vehicles: “The CATV provides a dynamic combination of mobility and flexibility to the U.S. Army enabling rapid response in all terrains. We are proud to support additional CATV production for the U.S. Army and are confident that the vehicle’s go-anywhere ability and modular design will meet their future needs, allowing them to carry out a range of missions from military operations to humanitarian assistance and disaster response.”

Beowulf is a dual-body amphibious vehicle offering exceptional tactical mobility and versatility. It leverages battle-tested driveline technologies from the BvS10 family, ensuring reliability, durability, and high availability for mission-critical operations. Its capabilities make it ideal for environments where conventional vehicles cannot operate effectively.

Manufactured by BAE Systems Hägglunds in northern Sweden, Beowulf benefits from expertise in Arctic conditions. This experience ensures that the vehicles meet the stringent requirements for Arctic operations, providing the U.S. Army with a robust solution for cold-weather missions.
