Bayraktar KIZILELMA advances as Türkiye’s first unmanned fighter jet with successful flight test

By Defence Industry Europe

Baykar Technologies, a leading drone manufacturer in Türkiye, has announced the successful completion of another flight test for its Bayraktar KIZILELMA unmanned fighter jet. The aircraft, described as Türkiye’s first indigenously developed unmanned fighter, is progressing according to its established development timeline.

The test, conducted at the AKINCI Flight Training and Test Center in Çorlu, Tekirdağ, involved the production prototype Bayraktar KIZILELMA PT-3 (tail number TC-ÖZB3). During the flight, the aircraft performed system identification activities, which are crucial for verifying its capabilities and ensuring readiness for further stages of development.

Baykar has incorporated notable improvements into the KIZILELMA production prototype based on experience from earlier models. These include structural modifications and advancements to the aircraft’s avionics systems. The integration of a new afterburner engine allows the aircraft to operate at higher speeds and near-supersonic performance. Combined with aerodynamic refinements, this engine enhances the jet’s manoeuvrability and operational range.

The KIZILELMA is also equipped with an advanced AESA radar, providing enhanced situational awareness. This feature enables the aircraft to perform demanding missions, further broadening its potential applications in modern aerial operations.

The Bayraktar KIZILELMA project was initiated in 2021, with all development fully financed by Baykar Technologies. The production prototype rolled off the assembly line on 14 November 2022 and conducted its maiden flight just one month later, on 14 December 2022. This rapid timeline highlights the company’s focus on efficient development and testing processes.

In 2023, the Bayraktar KIZILELMA achieved several milestones. It conducted formation flights alongside the Bayraktar AKINCI unmanned combat aerial vehicle and participated in close-formation flights with Türkiye’s manned fighter jets, including the F-16 SOLOTÜRK and F-5 Turkish Stars, during TEKNOFEST 2023. These flights showcased the aircraft’s interoperability and potential role in future aerial operations.

Additionally, the aircraft has been designed to take off and land on short-runway vessels, such as the TCG Anadolu. This capability positions the KIZILELMA as a strategic asset for maritime missions and enhances its operational flexibility in overseas deployments.

Baykar Technologies is a prominent exporter in Türkiye’s defence and aviation sector. In 2023, 90% of its revenue was derived from exports, amounting to $1.8 billion. The company has signed export agreements with 35 countries for its Bayraktar TB2 and AKINCI unmanned aerial vehicles, further solidifying its position in the global defence market.
