The contract covers eight LEGUAN bridge-laying systems mounted on Tatra Phoenix 10×10 wheeled chassis, together with specialist equipment including the bridge deployment and retrieval system. It also includes the delivery of 17 bridge spans with a length of 26 metres, as well as specialised tools and a comprehensive logistics support package.
Belgian land forces currently operate up to nine LEGUAN systems mounted on Leopard 1 tank chassis, which are in service with the 11th Engineer Battalion of the Motorised Brigade. Alongside the 4th Engineer Battalion, this unit is one of only two engineer battalions within the Belgian Land Component, although the two formations differ in structure and assigned roles.
LEGUAN is a two-span assault bridge system that can be deployed as a single 26-metre crossing or as two separate crossings of 14 metres each, with a bridge width of 4.01 metres. It meets the MLC 80 load class, allowing the passage of heavy tracked and wheeled vehicles, and is deployed horizontally, which reduces the likelihood of detection compared with vertically deployed scissor-type bridge
