Belgium to arm its F-35 fleet with StormBreaker guided bombs

By Defence Industry Europe

The U.S. State Department has announced the approval of Belgium's request for a potential sale of RTX GBU-53/B Small Diameter Bomb II (SDB II) precision-guided munitions. These advanced weapons are intended for Belgium's fleet of Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II multi-role combat aircraft.

The proposed deal, valued at up to $115 million, includes the purchase of 196 GBU-53/B SDB II combat bombs. In addition, Belgium seeks an unspecified number of mass and dimension mock-ups, diagnostic equipment, spare parts, and training and logistics support services.

The GBU-53/B StormBreaker bombs, known for their multi-functional guidance system, are capable of striking both stationary and moving targets. Weighing only 93 kg, these lightweight bombs can be carried in larger quantities by multi-role combat aircraft, allowing for the elimination of more targets while minimizing collateral damage.

According to the State Department, the sale is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the defence capabilities of U.S. allies. Belgium’s interest in these munitions highlights the country’s commitment to maintaining a robust and technologically advanced air force.

RTX has been producing and rigorously testing the GBU-53/B StormBreaker bombs. On July 23, RTX reported that in 2023 alone, 28 test drops were conducted using F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, F-15E Strike Eagle, and F-35B/C Lightning II aircraft, with all tests successfully hitting their targets.

Besides testing, RTX has been delivering these bombs to various customers, including the U.S. Department of Defence, which has received over 3000 units. The bombs have been integrated into Boeing F-15E Strike Eagle, F-15EX Eagle II, and F/A-18E/F Super Hornet aircraft. Integration with Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon, F-22A Raptor, and F-35 Lightning II aircraft is expected to be completed in the coming months.
