BlackSky Technology Inc. has been awarded a multimillion-dollar contract by the U.S. Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) to expand its Gen-3 Tactical Geospatial Intelligence (TACGEO) capabilities. The contract builds on previous government-funded research and development, supporting the launch and operational deployment of an advanced Gen-3 satellite.

Under the agreement, BlackSky will oversee all aspects of the satellite’s preparation, from pre-flight integration to on-orbit commissioning. The initiative aims to enhance space-based intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) for the U.S. Department of Defense.

BlackSky CEO Brian O’Toole emphasised the company’s mission to advance real-time intelligence capabilities. He highlighted the synergy between the Gen-3 satellite constellation and BlackSky’s AI-powered Spectra® platform, which enables low-latency analytics during live missions.

The TACGEO programme has already demonstrated the Gen-3 satellites’ effectiveness in delivering rapid insights to military personnel during training and operational exercises. The contract reaffirms the technology’s readiness for high-stakes defence applications.

BlackSky’s evolving satellite network is designed to provide greater capacity and flexibility for real-time intelligence. The integration of low-latency intersatellite communications will allow customers to rapidly re-task missions based on emerging priorities.

Enhanced onboard attitude control systems will further optimise operational efficiency. These upgrades ensure that BlackSky’s constellation remains adaptable to dynamic tactical requirements.

Unlike traditional mapping methods, BlackSky’s advanced capabilities enable real-time detection and classification of key military assets, including vehicles, aircraft, and vessels. A major breakthrough in the Gen-3 constellation is the ability to capture images through smoke and haze using Short-Wave Infrared (SWIR) technology.

This spectral enhancement extends BlackSky’s ability to provide actionable intelligence in diverse conditions, including nighttime, low-light environments, and adverse weather. The new capabilities will offer a critical advantage to military and security operations worldwide.
