BlackSky Technology has secured the next phase of a competitive U.S. Navy research contract to develop optical inter-satellite link (OISL) terminals for its Gen-3 satellite constellation. The new technology aims to accelerate the transfer of high-resolution imagery and large volumes of space-based data directly between satellites before reaching ground stations.

BlackSky Technology Inc. has secured a multi-year contract worth over $30 million to integrate its Gen-3 high-cadence tactical intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) services into the secure environment of a strategic international defence customer. The solution aims to accelerate sovereign space-based intelligence capabilities using proven commercial technology for high-frequency, low-latency tasking and AI-enabled analytics.

The upgrade will allow BlackSky’s high revisit satellite constellation to operate directly within the customer’s secure workflows, supporting fully secure and autonomous mission operations. “BlackSky is partnering with customers to integrate advanced commercial space, software, and AI solutions that deliver real-time intelligence services into our customer’s secure environments for 24/7 time-dominant missions,” said Brian O’Toole, BlackSky CEO.

The Gen-3 system provides very high-resolution imagery and enhanced AI-driven detection, classification, and identification of vehicles, aircraft, vessels, and other tactical objects. These capabilities support a growing range of strategic intelligence and tactical ISR applications for government customers.

“Customers worldwide have recognized Gen-3’s superior performance at a time when they are seeking to accelerate their sovereign space-based intelligence programs,” O’Toole said. “More and more customers are turning to BlackSky and we are committed to getting customers there faster, leveraging our proprietary technology stack of AI and real-time software solutions and fully vertically integrated Gen-3 satellite manufacturing capabilities.”

BlackSky continues to expand its Gen-3 satellite constellation with regular launches to meet increasing demand. Each satellite launch enhances capacity, increases revisit frequency, and gives customers greater flexibility to scale operations according to real-time mission needs.
