BlackSky wins seven-figure Gen-3 Assured contracts with new international defense customer after early access

BlackSky Technology has secured the next phase of a competitive U.S. Navy research contract to develop optical inter-satellite link (OISL) terminals for its Gen-3 satellite constellation. The new technology aims to accelerate the transfer of high-resolution imagery and large volumes of space-based data directly between satellites before reaching ground stations.

BlackSky said it was awarded multiple Gen-3 Assured services contracts totaling seven figures with a new international defense customer following an early access period. The company said the expansion reflects a rapid shift by the customer toward advanced space-based dynamic monitoring as it scales to support time-sensitive tactical intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance needs.

“This partnership reflects continued traction against our land-and-expand strategy and demonstrates the growing recognition that dynamic space-based intelligence is no longer optional—it’s essential,” said Brian O’Toole, BlackSky’s chief executive officer. “Assured gives our customers guaranteed, priority access to Gen-3 capacity over their operational areas of interest.”

O’Toole said the quality and reliability of collections experienced during early access programs were key factors in driving customers to renew subscriptions. “The quality and reliability of collections experienced during Assured early access programs play a key factor in compelling customers to renew their subscriptions,” he said.

BlackSky said growing international demand underscores the need for agile, responsive space-based intelligence, including multiple daily revisits, on-demand tasking and very high-resolution imagery integrated into existing intelligence workflows. “Our customers confront threats that evolve in real-time, and their intelligence systems need to match the demands of that operational tempo,” O’Toole said.

According to the company, Gen-3 Assured provides persistent monitoring, flexible tasking and rapid response for both tactical ISR and strategic intelligence missions. The system uses automated, end-to-end commercial architecture to enable machine-speed detection and classification of aircraft, vehicles, vessels and other objects, delivering real-time situational awareness at mission scale.
